People around the world have been navigating through uncharted waters over the last month or so due to the coronavirus. One of the biggest changes to our everyday lives is that many of us are staying home from work. (Side note - our shop in Longwood remains open with social distancing standards in place!) And what else happens when you spend time at home than finding home improvement projects to tackle?

One positive to come out of all of this is that we can sneak in a few extra hours in the garden every day - and it’s the perfect season for yard work, too! Tackle a few of these projects and your garden will look blue-ribbon-worthy in no time:

Start a compost pile. This is one of those projects that everyone says they’ll do, and then never gets around to. Check with your local government to see if they’ll provide you with a composter for free; if not, you can easily find one online or even build one. Aim for a balance of items that provide carbon - dried leaves, shredded newspapers - with items that provide nitrogen - kitchen scraps and other “green” items.
Inventory and organize all your tools. There’s nothing more frustrating than embarking on a garden project and not being able to find the right tool. Now is a great time to plan and organize your tool shed for the summer lawn care season. Be sure to check that your mower blades are sharp and you have plenty of line for your string trimmer. Design your dream garden. Spending time outside has probably given you a few ideas of how you’d ultimately like your garden to look. Even if you’re not a skilled artist, you can design your dream garden on paper. You can even find your home on Google Earth and print out the image so you have an exact scale of what your yard looks like! Be sure to research native species and plot them out based on their light requirements.
