The 5 Most Common Types of Grass in Florida Yards

Florida is home to a wide range of native plants and animals, with species varying from region to region. For the most part, people across the state experience humid, warm weather year-round with mostly mild winters. Even so, certain species thrive better in different areas of the state, including grass species. If you pay attention, you’ll see a handful of different varieties depending on where you go.

Each type of grass has its own aesthetic appeal and benefit for your home and landscaping. Here at Gator Mower Parts, we’ve seen them all! Here’s a quick rundown of the five most common grasses you’ll see around Florida:

  1. St. Augustine Grass. This is probably the most common type of grass you’ll find in Florida. You’ll recognize St. Augustine by its wide flat blades and its almost blue-green color. This grass grows quickly, keeping your lawn looking lush - but it’ll also need mowing more often.

  2. Bermuda Grass, also known as scutch grass, is the fastest-growing of the warm season grasses. This and its quick recuperation from damage means it’s a great choice for high-traffic areas.

  3. Centipede Grass is the perfect choice for homeowners who are more hands-off about their landscaping, as it’s one of the slower growing warm-season grasses. Keep in mind, though, that Centipede grass isn’t cut out for high traffic.

  4. Bahiagrass is the grass with long, skinny blades you often see at parks or fields. It’s stress resistant and hardy enough to survive a drought, but it’s not the most attractive when it goes to seed. Mow this grass often.

  5. Zoysia Grass is common on golf courses, known for its dense turf and low maintenance upkeep. Zoysia goes dormant after a frost, so you might need to do some re-seeding after a particularly cold winter.

Which type of grass is in your lawn? No matter the type, you always want to make sure you have a sharp mower blade when you mow. Need to get your mower tuned up before your next lawncare session?
