June is National Great Outdoors Month! Celebrate in Your own Backyard.

Did you know that June is National Great Outdoors month? This observation was established in 1998 as a week-long celebration of the outdoors and has since flourished into a month-long observation. According to www.greatoutdoorsmonth.org, this month encourages experienced outdoor enthusiasts and rookies alike to get outside and celebrate all the wonderful, life-sustaining things nature brings us each and every day.
To celebrate National Great Outdoors Month, you don’t have to plan a trip to the mountains or spend a day on the ocean. You can celebrate right in your backyard! Here are a few activities you and your family can do to celebrate this observation:
Encourage your kids to help you in the garden. The next time you work on your flower beds or harvest vegetables, encourage your children to join you and lend a hand. Help them identify the plants in your garden and teach them how to maintain a healthy lawn. If you do decide to teach them how to mow the lawn, be sure to follow all safety precautions and keep a close eye on them - June is also National Safety Month!
Spend an afternoon birdwatching. You’d be surprised at the number of different bird species you can find in your yard in a single afternoon. Try landscaping with trees and fruits that attract a variety of different birds and creatures. There are plenty of great books and online resources that can help you identify the birds you see! You’ll probably catch a glimpse of blue jays, cardinals, mockingbirds, doves, and more.
Plant some new, native, seasonal plants in your yard. According to UF IFAS, the warm, rainy summer months are the perfect time to plant palm trees. Do some research on other native species that would fit well in your current landscaping. Trees are amazing because they help lower the ambient temperature, provide shade, and make homes for lots of natural wildlife.
Every time you take out your mower to manicure your lawn, you’re celebrating the great outdoors! Savvy homeowners like you know that a beautiful lawn is more than just eye candy. A well-maintained lawn can bring a number of benefits to your home and your family.
