It’s Almost Time to Prepare Your Lawn for Fall

orlando parts people get ready for fall

Hang on - did we read that header right? It seems like we’re just getting used to the summer, but whether you’re ready or not, fall is just around the corner. Here in Central Florida, we don’t experience as much seasonal shift as the northern states do, but it’s still a good idea to start shifting your lawncare focus to planning for the fall and subsequent winter. After all, Florida winters are unpredictable, so it’s best to prepare.

The Orlando parts people at Gator Mower Parts know that you can maintain a beautiful lawn year-round with the right planning and know-how. Here are a few tasks you should start including in your regular lawn care schedule:

  1. Make sure the lawn is draining properly. One thing’s for sure - we’ve been getting a ton of rain lately. If you notice that the water stagnates and pools after a storm, it’s probably a good idea to aerate your lawn. This will allow the water to sink to your grass’s roots and give it the nourishment it needs rather than causing it to rot and die on the surface.

  2. Fill in the bare patches. The dog days of summer are the perfect time to fill in any dead or bare patches in your lawn. Sprinkle some seed in areas that need a little TLC, and make sure to water the area daily until the grass sprouts. We recommend re-seeding in the early morning or the evening so that the water will have the opportunity to soak in, rather than evaporating.

  3. Use the right type and amount of fertilizer. When fall and winter roll around, it’ll be time to change up your fertilizing frequency and formula, so be sure to maintain a regular fertilizing schedule throughout the summer. Doing so will help ensure your grass grows thick and strong making it more durable when lower temperatures roll around.

For best results and for your own safety, we recommend knocking out your summer lawn care to-do list in the mornings or the evenings so the water doesn’t evaporate quickly and you don’t have to bear the midday summer sun.
