Caring for Your Lawn when the Rains Keep Coming

Florida weather needs to make up its mind. Just a month ago, we were worried about how dry our lawns were; now, it seems like it rains just about every five minutes. Making the transition from drought conditions to oversaturation can be difficult, but it’s important to keep in mind that you can’t use the same lawncare techniques in one situation as you do in the other.

Here at Gator Mower Parts, we’re happy to see the grass is finally growing - but we want to ensure you treat it right and keep it healthy. So how do you get used to these new rainy days we’re seeing all over Central Florida? Here are a few tips:

  • Patience is a virtue. Especially if your grass is knee-high, you’re probably itching to get out there and mow it as soon as the rain stops. Patience, young grasshopper! It’s important that you give your grass time to breathe and drain out the excess moisture in the soil. Otherwise, you could be facing some serious rutting, tearing, and compaction, all of which can impede your grass’s natural growth.

  • Dig a little deeper. Even if you’ve been patient, we understand that sometimes you just have to get out there and get it done. Try using an aerator or a similar spiking tool to help create drainage channels in your lawn. This will allow the moisture to wick away faster - extra helpful if you’ve been experiencing storms once a day, like we have.

  • Clean things up. When finally the water has subsided, it’s important that you give your lawn a thorough cleaning to remove any debris and other obstacles the storm may have churned up. Remember, running your lawn mower over a stone or a large branch is not only harmful to your blades, it can also cause serious injury. It’s easier to be prepared than to pay for it later.

Any time the weather changes drastically, it’s a good idea to give your lawn mower a tune-up. After all, you and your trusty machine are facing an entirely new situation as you set out to conquer the swamp!
