Staying Safe Outside when the Temperatures Soar

stay safe in high temperatures lawn mower parts

It sure is hot outside! While we know it’s supposed to be hot in the Sunshine state, many parts of Florida have seen record temperatures during the month of June, with higher temperatures still to come. With the high pressure system that has settled over the southeast, rainstorm production has been suppressed, meaning we’re not getting much relief from these sweltering heat waves.

You obviously know that summer is big time lawn mowing season here in Central Florida, but recently it may seem like it’s impossible to mow the lawn at any time other than 6 AM or 9 PM, when you’d be disturbing the neighbors. If you decide to power through it, here are some tips to help you stay safe when you’re mowing on a hot day.

  • Stay hydrated! Keep a bottle of water nearby that’s big enough to satisfy your thirst from start to finish. A gallon jug is never overkill! Even if you manage to get by without sweating too much, your body still loses a good deal of moisture content when you’re out underneath the hot sun.

  • Practice sun protection. Skin cancer is fairly common here in Central Florida, even if you’re not spending long days mowing. Any time you go out to mow, slather on a good sunscreen that’s at least SPF 30 from head to toe. Wear a hat and sunglasses to protect your face and eyes. And if you’re sweating, be sure to reapply your sunscreen intermittently!

  • Take breaks if you need them. In addition to our record high temperatures, we’re also seeing record levels of humidity. For some, it may feel like you’re swimming through the air. This can make it more difficult to breathe than usual. When you’re mowing the lawn, the last thing you want to do is lose consciousness and lose control of your machine. If you are overheated or you simply need a breather, take a break! The lawn will be there when you decide to resume.

If it’s possible for you, avoid mowing your lawn between 10 AM and 4 PM, as this is when the sun’s rays are at their strongest. If you can, make sure someone else is at home while you mow so they can keep an eye on you to be sure you’re staying safe. They can also refill your water jug if you need it!
